New experience

The Gila National Forest in New Mexico is managed by the USDA Forest Service. Its Christmas tree cutting happens in open pine woodland — hillsides of cured tan grass under widely spaced ponderosa pines, and rockier ground carrying stands of shorter, denser junipers and young conifers. Other photographs show a small saw at work beside a young pine, a cut tree strapped into the bed of a pickup parked on bare dirt among the trees, a close view of the dark green needles of a young fir, and a red National Forest tag hanging from a branch.
