Grand Canyon National Park Backcountry Permits
Hosted by National Park Service
New experience
Backcountry travel in Grand Canyon National Park, managed by the National Park Service. The photographs look out over the canyon itself: horizontal bands of red, grey and cream rock stacked into cliffs, terraces and free-standing buttes, ridge receding behind ridge into haze. Several frames follow the trails, dirt tracks cut in tight switchbacks down red slopes, a route traversing a spine past a small stone rest shelter roofed in green metal with hikers gathered at it, and the green floor of a side canyon far below. Another shows two people under full packs walking a sandy trail through open ponderosa forest on the rim, with grass, low brush and fallen limbs between the trunks. Two of the images are maps rather than scenery: one dividing the backcountry into lettered use areas across the drainages, the other a detail of the inner canyon showing the corridor trails, ranger stations, rest houses and distances between the South Rim and the river.
